School Support for Students with Diabetes

Coming together to meet the Challenge of Diabetes

What is School Support for Students with Diabetes?
This program is designed to create a safe supposrtive school environment for students with diabetes. School Support provides a resource for education and support for everyone who works with a student who has diabetes.

Why is this so important?
Children challenged by diabetes during school years need to develop independence in caring for this disease, maintain good control, and avoid missing valuable learning time.

Why now?
More and more children are being diagnosed with diabetes. It is the second most common chronic disease in children.

Intensive management and sophisticated treatment regimens are becoming more commonplace. This requires a much higher level of knowledge, understanding, and responsibility for school staff.

Program Objectives

Facilitate
Communication and cooperation between school personnnel, the student and his/her family, and the medical team.

Educate
Clarify legal parameters, required accommodations, and the student's medical and developmental needs.

Educational seminars for school personnel on basic diabetes care, nutritional concerns, and handling emergencies.

“Kids on the Block” (click for brochure) provide a fun and effective educational tool to teach children in grades 2 through 4 about diabetes and to support the children who have the disease.

Develop
A written diabetes management plan for school hours wit a formal evaluation and follow up as an essential part of the service.
